Seven Years

This week marked the seventh wedding anniversary for my husband and I.

Seven years. I don’t feel like it’s a bad stretch to be fair. Not as many as some, but a few more than others too.

And I found myself reflecting upon our marriage much more so this anniversary, than any others that had gone before us.

Perhaps it’s because seven feels like a ‘big’ number. Not quite up there with ten, but definitely more substantial than five. Perhaps it was because so much is made of the number seven; lucky for some, the ‘seven year itch’.

Or, perhaps it was because this past year since our last anniversary, we have been brought face to face with the toughest challenges of our time together. Which I think, in it’s very nature forces you to question life and your relationships.

These past seven years have seen many changes in our lives. New jobs, a new home, a move from the city, and, of course, a baby boy of whom has turned three within the blink of an eye.

When I’m asked about marriage and my husband, I can’t help but to always think back to a Charlotte York quote from the first Sex and the City movie:

Samantha Jones: “Relationships aren’t just about being happy. I mean, how often are you happy in your relationship?”

Charlotte York: “Every day.”

Samantha Jones: “Every day?”

Charlotte York: “Well not all day every day but yes, every day.”

And I think that’s it. At times, I could happily be the mad cat lady that lives in a cottage all by herself. But at some point in the day, when my husband or child or both are driving me crazy, I flick through my photos or texts or emails looking for something else, and within an instant I’m reminded how much I really do love my little family and this crazy archaic way of living that’s called marriage.

Ups, downs and plateaus aplenty, it’s seven years I wouldn’t want to rewrite in any other way.

And so, just for fun, I composed this little ditty for my husband. You know, for putting up with me for all this time.

Seven Years

Seven years upon this day,
The words ‘I do’, we prepared to say.
Down the aisle I tried to glide,
A challenging feat for this tearful bride.
We said our vows and at ‘the kiss’,
The crowd did cheer, I’m no longer a Miss!
We danced and laughed the night away,
That magical moment, our wedding day.
You treated our guests to the Anfield Rap,
On stage you sang as everyone clapped.
Fireworks drew the show to a close,
So happy I was that you had proposed.
And how things have changed since we first were wed,
We now have a Jude, asleep in our bed.
They say this time makes for a restless stitch,
Some people call it the seven year itch.
I am not concerned, I cannot pretend,
Not when I married my very best friend.
So happy anniversary, Mr J,
I look forward to many more coming our way.
